TD2: Interactive TouchDesigner — Sensors, OSC, MIDI & DMX
Participants connect TouchDesigner to external control sources and learn the minimal networking knowledge required to make creative protocols work reliably. Through a guided build, they create a small “show control” system using two different inputs and a simple state-based scene logic (idle/active/reset). The focus is expressive, stable control—not just connectivity—so participants can design interactive systems that survive real installation conditions.

Learning goals
- Understand creative protocols: OSC, MIDI, DMX/ArtNet (and where NDI fits).
- Configure a working input pipeline into TD (CHOP-based control).
- Map input to meaningful visual/scene changes with stability and safety.
- Identify and mitigate common bottlenecks (network, device, heavy patch).
Learning outcomes
- Connect TD to external input devices (MIDI, sensor, or OSC stream).
- Build a TD system that responds to interaction and drives visuals.
- Apply basic protocol troubleshooting (IP/addressing basics, device mapping checks).
- Implement fallback behavior when inputs fail (e.g., safe idle state).
Learning Details
- Duration: ~3h (180 min)
- Explore (10): “TD as brain” demo + quick case study
- Learn (40): Theory Module — networks/protocols, event vs continuous control, NDI basics
- Create (115): connect inputs → map/control → scene states → output (+ optional DMX/ArtNet)
- Share (15): demonstrate 2 inputs + critique (expressive vs chaotic, weakest link)
- Deliverable: [TD control template (.toe) + protocol checklist + simple state diagram]
