TD1: TouchDesigner for Projection Mapping

TD1: TouchDesigner for Projection Mapping

TD1: TouchDesigner for Projection Mapping

Participants learn TouchDesigner as a real-time image pipeline: input → processing → masking/warping → output, with a practical focus on mapping fundamentals and resolution discipline. After building a minimal mapping network, they add one controlled generative element to align with DAL’s interest in motion, geometry, and spatial experience, while maintaining performance and readability. The session ends with a reusable template and a clear decision sense of when TD is the right tool versus other mapping software.

Learning goals

  • Understand TD mapping workflow and essential TOP concepts.
  • Build a clean mask/warp pipeline for a physical mockup.
  • Add one generative layer without breaking performance.
  • Save an organized template that can be reused and modified.

Learning outcomes

  • Build a basic TD network that maps media to a simple façade/3D mockup.
  • Apply simple masks and warp/ corner pin alignment in TOPs.
  • Identify when TD is the best choice vs other mapping software.
  • Implement basic performance checks(FPS awareness, resolution limits) and document them.

Learning Details

  • Duration: ~2h50 (170 min)
  • Explore (10): what we’ll map + briefcase study reference
  • Learn (35): Theory Module —real-time image pipelines, TOP resolution discipline, masking/warp concepts
  • Create (110): starter network → mask/warp → generative layer →“install-ready” template
  • Share (15): mapped output + critique(readability, space-driven aesthetics)
  • Deliverable: [TD mapping template(.toe) with comments + one generative control parameter]
